How to Restore Exchange 2013 Database from Backup

In this post, we will discuss two methods on how to restore Exchange 2013 Database from Backup (1) restore Exchange 2013 to original location and (2) restore exchange database to a different location.

Note: In case you have chosen Windows Server Backup to restore the database, you cannot choose a part of the database to be restored. The entire database in the backup set will be restored.

You can restore the database to its original location or any other location.

Restore Exchange 2013 Database to Original Location

If you restore the database in its original location the previous database will be lost and overwritten by the new database. This technique is useful when the database gets corrupted. So only restore the data in the original location in case you don’t need the previous data because it is not possible to recover data if it’s overwritten by some other data.

To restore from a specific volume, follow these steps:

  1. Open Windows Server Backup.
  2. In the Action Pane on the Right, Select Recover.
  3. On the Getting Started screen, select This Server (Server Name) and click Next.
  4. On the Select Date Screen, select the Date from which you want to restore the data.
  5. On the select Recovery Type Screen, select Applications, and then click Next.
  6. On the Select Application Screen, make sure that Exchange is highlighted and click Next.
  7. On the Specify Recovery Option screen, the option Recover To Original Location should be selected and click Next.
  8. On the Confirmation Screen, click Recover.
  9. Once the Recovery is complete click Close.

Restore Exchange Database to Different Location

When you recover data to an alternate location in Exchange Server, you can extract data from restored data. Before you can perform any work on the restored database, you need to put it in a clean state. You will need to use eseutil .exe command for this.

Here are the steps you need to follow in order to restore data to an alternate location:

  1. Perform Step 1 to Step 6 as stated in above method [Recovering to original location].
  2. On Specify Recovery Option Screen, select the option Recover to Another Location.
  3. Click Browse and select the location where you want to restore the data.
  4. On Confirmation Screen, selects Recover. Once the recovery is complete click close.
